Free PMP PDUs: Where to Earn Them Without Paying

PMP renewal takes 60 PDUs every three years. Paid PDU bundles are easy to find, but you don't need one: PMI accepts many activities that cost nothing. This guide covers legitimate free sources, how to claim each one in PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements System (CCRS), and the mistakes that cause trouble at audit time.

One thing first: free PDUs don't make renewal completely free. PMI still charges a certification renewal fee, which depends on membership and region. Check the current amount in your myPMI dashboard.

Quick refresher: what your free PDUs must add up to

Per PMI's CCR Handbook, a PMP needs:

One hour of an eligible activity equals one PDU, and shorter activities count in 0.25-PDU steps. Plan your free sources so the Talent Triangle areas are covered, not just the total.

Free Education PDUs

1. PMI's free online courses

PMI offers some eLearning courses free to anyone with a free PMI.org account. Its AI courses page currently lists several free options, including Generative AI Overview for Project Managers, Talking to AI: Prompt Engineering for Project Managers and PMI Essentials: Seven AI Project Patterns. Courses that are free for everyone carry a badge.

How to claim: After you finish, check CCRS to see whether the PDUs were added. If they weren't, report the course yourself under Online or Digital Media and keep the completion record.

2. PMXPO on-demand

PMXPO is PMI's free virtual event. According to PMI's PMXPO page, PMXPO 2026 is available on demand through 29 January 2027 and is listed at up to 12 PDUs. You need to register (it's free), and the PDUs you actually earn depend on the sessions you watch.

How to claim: follow the event's PDU instructions. If you report it yourself, list each session with its date and Talent Triangle split.

3. Webinars on ProjectManagement.com

ProjectManagement.com is PMI's community site. Most of its webinars are Premium, a PMI member benefit, but it also has a smaller set of on-demand webinars open to all users. PMI also offers a 30-day trial membership with premium webinar access, no credit card required, per pmi.org/membership.

How to claim: link your ProjectManagement.com account to your PMI.org account. PMI's handbook says Education PDUs are then reported automatically. Self-report any videos that aren't auto-credited in CCRS.

4. PMI chapter webinars and meetings

Many PMI chapters run free or low-cost virtual sessions, and some are open to non-members. Chapter events count as "Organization Meetings" when they include an educational part.

How to claim: keep the registration confirmation or attendance letter, then report the session in CCRS. Some chapters upload PDUs for you; check the event page.

5. Podcasts

PMI's handbook explicitly accepts podcasts as Online or Digital Media education. Several project management podcasts publish free episodes with PDU guidance.

How to claim: report each episode (or a batch with clear dates) under Online or Digital Media. Include the provider name, title, a short description and dates, and split the time across the Talent Triangle areas.

6. Self-directed reading

Books, articles, white papers and blogs that relate to the PMP all count, at one PDU per hour of reading. Free options include PMI's own blog posts and reports, library books and your organization's learning library.

How to claim: report under Reading with the author, title, description and dates. Keep notes; for an audit, notes and dates are the evidence PMI asks for.

7. Informal learning

Structured discussions also count: being mentored, panel discussions, and lunch-and-learns at work. These are often free and easy to overlook.

Free Giving Back PDUs (up to 25)

How to claim: report each activity under its Giving Back category with the host organization, a description and dates. Save copies of what you wrote or presented, and notes on any mentoring arrangement.

Where to find current free options

Free webinars and chapter events change every week, and on-demand content disappears. PDU Finder is a free directory of current PDU opportunities that you can filter by Talent Triangle area and cost, with each listing linked to its original source. It also includes a simple 60-PDU planner to check your Talent Triangle split. If you'd like a short roundup by email, there's an optional free newsletter.

Pitfalls to avoid

FAQ

Can I renew my PMP using only free PDUs?
Yes, all 60 PDUs can come from free activities if they meet the Talent Triangle minimums and Giving Back caps. The renewal fee still applies.

Do I need to be a PMI member to get free PDUs?
No. A free PMI.org account gives you access to PMI's free courses, and PMXPO on-demand registration is free. Membership unlocks more webinars, but you don't need it.

Are podcast PDUs legitimate?
Yes. PMI's handbook lists podcasts under Online or Digital Media. Keep notes and dates.

How many free PDUs can I get from volunteering?
Volunteering is part of Giving Back, which is capped at 25 PDUs per cycle. That cap is shared with mentoring, creating content, presenting and working as a practitioner.

Where can I find free PDU webinars this month?
Check PDU Finder for current free listings, and confirm the PDU details on each provider's page.

PDU Finder is an independent directory and is not affiliated with PMI. PMP and PMI are marks of Project Management Institute, Inc. Check PMI's current handbook before you renew.
